Some people are quite content staying in the same job and doing the same things for the bulk of their working years. Others stay within the same company but go from building parts or working in the mailroom to becoming a manager. And still more find at different points in their life that they need to make a big change and find something completely new. If you're at a crossroads and are thinking of starting a new career, we can help you get started.
When you're changing your career you want to make sure that you're choosing something that will not only pay the bills, but also that you're good at and will get some enjoyment out of. Ending up assembling in a factory if you're a creative person, for example, will only mean that you'll be searching for a new job again in a few years when you've had too much. So, start by making a list of all of the things that you love to do and the things that you excel at.
Once you have your list, it's time to get out there and start researching job options. This does not mean looking on job boards to see if there is a posting for a retail manager or individual who works as a children's online retailer (website example). Research all of the different careers existing that fit with your list. There are so many jobs out there that most of us do not even realize are possibilities for making a living. Some allow you to work from home and make a decent living, while others are great for artists or performers who can't find work directly in their field.
Once you have found some careers that interest you, start looking into options for training and finding work. If you want to be an police officer than you will have to go to school and the police academy. On the other hand, a film producer could come from a variety of backgrounds but needs to live in cities like Vancouver, New York, or Los Angeles. Decide what you're willing to sacrifice for this job change.
Once you have chosen your desired profession, it's time to get some experience. If you don't have the money and time to go back to school you should think about finding a mentor and setting up and internship. If you want to work in finance you could work a few mornings a week at a private mortgage firm. This will get your resume in shape for when it's time for you to start applying for a new job.
